A Contradictory Life

London, an Instagram round up

The English language is like London: proudly barbaric yet deeply civilised, too, common yet royal, vulgar yet processional, sacred yet profane. -Stephen Fry

A couple of weeks ago I did an Instagram round up of our time spent in Dubai and today – have a look at that post here. Today, I am doing the same for London.

London

We had the best day being the MOST excited tourists! We survived our first tube ride and started our sightseeing with a walking tour. It started at Trafalgar Square by The National Gallery and then we went on to see the changing of the horse guards at The Cavalry at Whitehall followed by a walk down The Royal Mile where we saw St James's Pace and Park, Clarence House where Prince Charles lives and ended off the tour at Buckingham Palace. We then hopped back on to the bus and saw everything; Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly, Westminster Bridge, London Eye, Covent Garden, St Paul's, London Bridge, Tower of London, Hyde Park Corner, Harrods, and Kensington Palace and Gardens. It was pouring with rain the entire time but we refused to move down from the upper deck (the view is just better!). I love this place. I love traveling. After an early start, an hour and a half of walking, six hours in the rain and a tube ride back during rush hour we are loving some time on Kath's couch. We are drinking tea, non-stop chatting and looking forward to a home-cooked meal. #TheBigBus #travelLondon #travelUK #London

I woke up this morning with a sense of nostalgia for a place that I am still in. I am feeling the pressure of passing time and keep reminding myself to remain conscious and attentive; to soak in, enjoy and learn from every moment. The streets, buildings, parks and people here all exude a sense of History whilst promising a new and enthralling, but uncontrollable, future. Thinking back on everything that we saw yesterday, and realising how much more there is to still see, explore and learn from I am reminded of this quotation by Samuel Johnson; "You find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." #London #travelUK #travelLondon #TheBigBus #wanderlust

We had the perfect day. We took the tube out to Notting Hill this morning and fell in love. It is one of the loveliest places I have ever seen. We wondered around for a couple of hours and after spending some weak Rands in Portobello Market (worth it!) we made our way to Kensington which is equally as quaint and beautiful. We walked down to Kensington Palace and Gardens and this is where this picture was taken. We then strolled through Hyde Park and it was idyllic. The park was filled with runners, families throwing a ball around, moms pushing strollers, people walking their dogs and sun tanners. Does everybody get the day off when the sun is out? It sure does seem that way. We made our way through Knightsbridge and then to Harrods where Ali was in Heaven / Hell. We ended off our day in Leicester Square, Piccadilly and Soho. The night life here is something to witness. I keep going on about the thousands of people milling around, but it is captivating. We slept for three hours last night and walked for nine out of the twelve hours we were out today (I wish I had a Fitbit to keep track of the distance and steps we are doing every day) but we are not in the least bit exhausted, rather energised. Watch our Snapchats if you want to experience a, what we would consider, perfect day in London. Or at least ours so far. #London #travelUK #travelLondon #KensingtonPalace #KensingtonGardens

If you google best views in London, The Royal Observatory in Greenwich features amongst some of the best. This morning Kath took us too see it and we were lucky enough to experience it on one of the most beautiful days. I don't even know how to begin thanking: 1. This girl to the right of me and her boyfriend for so graciously hosting us this week. We love you and miss you already my friend. We fell in love with your new home city and will definitely be back. 2. @seamsandsilhouettes who took this pic for being the most fantastic travel partner! Our enthusiasm and energy must be unrivaled and love that we were so in sync with everything we wanted to do, see and eat. 3. London, as pictured in the background, for the wonderful experiences. We would need another few weeks to fully appreciate your history, culture, sights and people but we did good. #travelUK #travelLondon #TheRoyalObservatory #Greenwich #Londonskyline #viewsofLondon

This was the view from our flight out of London which left an hour and forty minutes late which means we missed our connecting flight and have a six hour wait in Dubai. This in turn means that we'll only get home after dark and not at lunchtime as planned to have the afternoon to spend unpacking, sharing our travel stories (& gifts) and getting ready for the week ahead. Emirates gave us a voucher for "food" – we could get one coffee, a limp fruit salad and a packet of chips. We've been awake for 18 hours, have a further 5 hour wait here and then a 10 hour flight back home but I am trying not to be a grumpy sod – we have been so lucky with our travels so far and have seen the most incredible things, including this view. I wonder if the Boks were playing in that stadium when we flew over?
